SaaS Explainer Video: Animated or Your Real Product?
A SaaS explainer video comes in two kinds. An animated explainer tells the story of the problem with illustrations and a voice-over, and is usually made by a studio. A product explainer shows your real app solving that problem in 5 to 15 steps, with captions on each step. Animation works when the idea is abstract or the product is not built yet. For most SaaS teams with a working product, showing the real UI explains faster and stays true longer, because you can record it again when the interface changes. Klevo makes that second kind: you describe the flow to Claude or ChatGPT, the AI clicks through your web app, and you get an MP4 with a smooth cursor, zooms and captions.
What should a SaaS explainer video explain?
One thing: how your product turns the viewer’s problem into a result. Everything else is optional.
- The problem, in one line the viewer recognizes.
- The product doing the job, step by step, in the words of your UI.
- The result, on screen: the report, the sent email, the published page.
- The next step, one call to action at the end.
If you can’t show the result on screen, the video ends on a promise instead of proof, and viewers notice.
Animated or screen-recorded: which explainer fits?
| Animated explainer | Product explainer (real UI) | |
|---|---|---|
| What’s on screen | Illustrations, characters, motion graphics | Your actual app |
| Best for | Abstract ideas, pre-launch, brand campaigns | Showing how the product works |
| Who makes it | A studio or a motion designer | You, a screen recorder, or an AI that records |
| After a UI change | Still accurate, since it doesn’t show the UI | Needs a new recording |
| Proof it works | Implied | Visible |
Many teams end up with both: one animated brand video for the top of the funnel, and a set of product explainers for the homepage, onboarding and sales. The landing page video guide covers the homepage slot.
Why do product explainers go out of date?
Because the product keeps shipping. A renamed menu or a new onboarding step makes last quarter’s video quietly wrong. Re-recording by hand takes an afternoon, so the old video stays up.
The fix is to treat the explainer as a script instead of footage. Klevo saves every recording as a list of steps, so after a release the AI renders the same steps again on the new UI. A step that no longer works fails with a screenshot, which tells you what changed (keep demo videos current after every release).
How do you make a SaaS explainer video with Klevo?
- Write the flow as 5 to 15 steps, the way you’d explain it to a new customer. The product demo script template helps.
- Connect Klevo to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code (setup guide).
- Ask the AI to record it: “On https://app.myapp.com, create a project, invite a teammate, publish the page. 16:9, captions on each step.”
- The AI clicks through your app in a browser on Klevo’s servers, checks a screenshot after every step and retries a step that misses.
- Klevo renders the MP4 with a smooth cursor, zooms on small targets, captions and, if you ask, AI narration.
For an app behind a login, save a test account as a secret instead of typing a password in the chat (record a demo of an app behind a login). If you already have a screen recording of the flow, upload it: the AI picks the frames that tell the flow and Klevo adds the cursor, zooms and captions.
What makes an explainer easy to follow without sound?
Most explainers autoplay muted. So:
- One caption per step, short, in the words on the screen (captions that explain a demo).
- Zoom on what matters, especially small buttons and toggles.
- Count steps, not seconds. A 9-step flow at 3 to 4 seconds a step is about 30 to 40 seconds (how long should a demo video be).
- The right format for the channel: 16:9 for the site, 9:16 for social, a device frame for mobile (formats by channel).

FAQ
How long should a SaaS explainer video be?
Long enough to show one flow from problem to result. For most products that is 5 to 15 steps, about 30 to 90 seconds.
Is an animated explainer better than a screen recording?
Not for showing how a working product works. Animation is better for abstract ideas or before the product exists. A real UI shows proof.
Can Klevo make animated explainer videos?
No. Klevo records your real web app. For characters and motion graphics, use an animation studio or a motion designer.
Can I add a voice-over?
Yes. AI narration reads your captions and spends voice credits. On Pro and Ultra you choose the voice and its tuning.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The browser runs on Klevo’s servers. You connect Klevo to your AI chat and describe the flow.
