Chrome Screen Recorder: Built-in Options and Extensions
Chrome on Mac and Windows has no built-in screen recorder. To record what’s in a Chrome tab you have three options: your computer’s own recorder (Cmd+Shift+5 on a Mac, Snipping Tool or Xbox Game Bar on Windows, Screen capture on a Chromebook), a Chrome extension such as Loom or Screencastify, or a web-based recorder that asks Chrome for permission to share your screen. The Recorder panel in Chrome DevTools sounds like one, but it records your clicks as a replayable script, not a video.
Which one fits depends on what the video is for. A quick bug report needs anything that captures the tab. A product demo for a landing page needs more: zoom on the clicks, a clean take, and a way to update it when the app changes.
Does Chrome have a built-in screen recorder?
Only on ChromeOS. On a Chromebook, the Screen capture tool in Quick Settings records the full screen, a window or a part of the screen, and saves the video to your Downloads.
On Mac and Windows, the Chrome browser itself has no record button. People find the DevTools Recorder panel and assume it is one. It isn’t: it saves your clicks and typing as a user flow you can replay and export for testing tools. It’s useful for tests and for writing down the steps of a demo, but it doesn’t produce a video file.
How do you record a Chrome tab without installing anything?
Use the recorder that ships with your operating system:
| System | Built-in recorder | How to start | Records sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| macOS | Screenshot toolbar | Cmd+Shift+5, then Record | Microphone, if you pick one in Options |
| Windows 11 | Snipping Tool | Open Snipping Tool, switch to video | Depends on your version’s settings |
| Windows 10 and 11 | Xbox Game Bar | Win+G, then the record button | The app’s sound and optionally the microphone |
| ChromeOS | Screen capture | Quick Settings, then Screen capture | Microphone, if you turn it on |
To record just the browser, size the Chrome window first and record that window or area. Close other tabs and turn on Do Not Disturb, so a notification doesn’t land in the middle of the take.
How do Chrome screen recorder extensions work?
An extension asks Chrome to share a tab, a window or the whole screen, records it and usually uploads it to the maker’s cloud with a share link. Loom, Screencastify and Vidyard are common ones. Most add a webcam bubble, a microphone track and simple trimming, and many have free plans with limits on length or the number of videos.
Extensions are the right tool for a message to a teammate or a customer: record, share the link, done. They are a weaker fit for a demo that lives on your website for months, for two reasons:
- The take is still you. You rehearse the flow, click through it live, fumble, record again. A 90-second demo can take an afternoon.
- The video goes out of date. When a button moves or a screen gets a new label, the recording shows an app that no longer exists, and you record the whole flow again.
Some extensions and desktop recorders add auto zoom on clicks, which fixes the “tiny button on a phone screen” problem. Our guide to screen recorders with auto zoom compares those.
What should you use to record a product demo in Chrome?
Match the tool to the job:
- Bug report or quick reply: the built-in recorder or an extension. Speed matters more than polish.
- Async walkthrough for one customer: an extension with a webcam bubble and a share link. See Loom alternatives for product demos if Loom’s limits get in the way.
- Automated test video: Playwright records a video of every test run; Playwright video recording shows the setup.
- Landing page, onboarding or launch demo: a tool that renders a polished video from the steps, so you can render it again when the app changes.
For the fourth job, the steps are worth more than the take. If you have the steps written down, you can produce the video again in minutes after every release instead of re-recording it. How to make a product demo video walks through the full process.
How does Klevo record a web app?
Klevo doesn’t record your screen. It runs its own browser on its servers, and the AI you already use (Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor) drives it one step at a time: open the URL, click this, type that, with a short caption for each step. When the flow is done, Klevo renders an MP4 with a smooth cursor, a zoom on each step, captions and an optional device frame. Apps behind a login work through saved login secrets, so a password is never typed into the chat (recording an app behind a login).
Because the video comes from a script of steps, changing it is an edit, not a retake: re-render the same steps in another format or device, or after the UI changes. And if you already have a screen recording from Chrome, you can upload it and pick the moments to turn into steps instead.
